Chapter 16: Temperature and Heat
Warm-Ups
1.
A piece of wood at 130 degrees C can be picked up comfortably, but a piece of aluminum at the same temperature will give a painful burn. Why is this?
2.
Estimate the amount of heat necessary to raise your body temperature by 1 degree Fahrenheit.
3.
A metal plate has a circular hole cut in it. If the temperature of the plate increases, will the diameter of the hole increase, decrease, or remain unchanged?
4.
In an attempt to open a new jar of peanut butter, you run very hot tap water over the (steel) lid. Estimate the change in the diameter of the lid.
