Chapter 15: Fluids
Warm-Ups

1.

The atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1.013 x 105 N/m2. The unit of pressure N/m2 is also called a pascal (Pa). The surface area of an average adult body is about 2 m2. How much crushing force does the atmosphere exert on people? Why don't we get crushed?

Calculate this value in pounds using the fact that the weight of a 1 kilogram mass is 2.2 pounds.

2.

The atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude exponentially according to the relation p = poe-(0.00012)h where h is the altitude above sea level in meters and po= 1.013 x 105 N/m2.

The average atmospheric pressure in Florida is close to po. Estimate the average atmospheric pressure in Denver (The elevation at Denver is at about 1500 m.)

3.

Water is pumped up a pipeline as shown. The water pours out at the top and to the ground. The pump is running at constant speed. Compare the water speed at the three points A, B, and C in the pipeline.

STATE YOUR REASONS FOR ALL THE ANSWERS.

4.

Estimate the force on a 1.5 m2 windshield as a 60 mph (30 m/s) wind passes near its surface. The air in the car is stationary and the car windows are shut tight.
