Chapter 11: Japanese Art before 1392
Visual and Style Analysis

1.

From your CD, bring up the picture of the inner shrine, Ise. For an almost 2,000 year old wooden structure, the shrine is remarkably well-preserved. Explain why.

2.

Create a study set on your CD that includes the inner shrine, Ise and the Roman temple called the Maison Carrée, at Nîmes. Talk about the similarities and differences between these two monuments.

3.

Look at the main compound of the Horyu-ji on your CD. Use the "Take Notes" function of your CD to jot down observations about how the compound both reaches upward into space and remains securely footed on earth. Based on your notes, write a brief essay on "Mass, Space, and Gravity" in the Horyu-ji.

4.

Create a study set on your CD that includes the Horyu-ji and the Great Stupa, Sanchi from the chapter on early Indian art and architecture. What do the two structures have in common?

5.

Open up the picture of Buddhist symbols from you CD. For each of the symbols represented, write a brief description of the symbolic meaning.
