Chapter 1: Why and How to Study Ecology
Organizations

The following links will connect you to many of the organizations and journals valuable to professionals in the field of ecology.

The American Institute of Biological Sciences
The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) was chartered by the U.S. government in 1947 as a nonprofit scientific organization to advance research and education in the biological, medical, environmental, and agricultural sciences.

Animal Behaviour Journal
Animal Behaviour is a leading international publication. It contains critical reviews, original papers, and research articles on all aspects of animal behaviour. Animal Behaviour is a popular journal read by biologists, ethologists, psychologists, physiologists, and veterinarians.

BIOSIS—Internet Resource Guides
BIOSIS is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to foster the growth, communication, and use of biological knowledge for the common good. It maintains the world's largest collection of abstracts and bibliographic references to biological and medical literature. BIOSIS processes approximately 550,000 items each year, from primary research and review journals to books, monographs, and conference proceedings. The Internet Resource Guide for Ecology contains a large and comprehensive list of links pertinent to the science of ecology.

The California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences' mission is to shed light on the wonders and value of the natural world through its exhibits, research, lectures, courses, publications, symposia, and expeditions. It is a private, nonprofit institution, supported by donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals, and by the City and County of San Francisco.

The Chicago Academy of Sciences
The Chicago Academy of Sciences specializes in the ecology and natural history of the Midwest—from the Great Lakes to the prairies. It is a vital cultural and educational institution dedicated to promoting scientific literacy for all citizens.

Ecological Research
Ecological Research is the official journal of the Ecological Society of Japan. Its mission is to promote internationally the results of research in ecology. The journal publishes original research papers, critical reviews, technical reports, and notes and comments covering all aspects of ecology.

The Ecologist
The Ecologist is a magazine focusing on worldwide environmental issues.

The European Science Foundation
The European Science Foundation's mission is to act as a catalyst for the development of science by bringing together leading scientists and research-funding agencies to debate, plan, and implement pan-European initiatives.

The Journal of Ecology
The Journal of Ecology is the premier journal in the field of plant ecology and is edited for the British Ecological Society at the Open University in Oxford, England.

The Journal for Evolutionary Biology
The Journal of Evolutionary Biology is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed, international journal. It covers both micro- and macroevolution of all types of organisms. The aim of the journal is to integrate perspectives across molecular and microbial evolution, behaviour, genetics, ecology, life histories, development, palaeontology, systematics, and morphology.

Marine Ecology
Marine Ecology publishes research involving investigations of organs, cells, or cell components, the organism within its environment, and related fields that may provide clues to the delicate interrelationships between organisms, as well as distribution patterns, stratifications, behaviour, bottom structures, sediments, and climates.

The National Academy of Sciences
The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. The Academy has a mandate from the U.S. Congress requiring it to advise the U.S. federal government on scientific and technical matters.

The National Research Council Canada
The National Research Council of Canada is the principal science and technology agency of the Canadian federal government. It is composed of 16 research institutes located in 11 major centers across Canada.

The National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through programs in almost 20,000 research and education projects in science and engineering.

Nature
Nature is an international weekly journal about science. Nature publishes papers from any area of science. Nature also publishes opinion articles, news stories, briefings, and recruitment features, and contributed material such as news and views, scientific correspondence, and reviews of books, software, and products.

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis
The mission of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis is to "advance the state of ecological knowledge through the search for general patterns and principles" and to "organize and synthesize ecological information in a manner useful to researchers, resource managers, and policy makers addressing important environmental issues." It fosters new ecological techniques in mathematical modeling, dynamic simulation, visualization of ecological systems, and digital mapping of complex ecological phenomena.

Oikos Journal
Oikos is one of the core journals in ecology. It publishes nine issues annually comprising not less than 1,900 pages of theoretical, as well as empirical, research in ecology.

Science Magazine
Science is a weekly general scientific publication. It is both a traditional journal and a news magazine.

Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society
The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on zoology with an emphasis on the diversity, systematics, interrelationships, and evolution of animals both living and extinct.
