Graphic designers subscribe to a number of basic rules in order to communicate effectively. Visit the graphic design website and write an overview of some of their basic rules discussing why they use them.


Typography encompasses literally thousands of typefaces. Visit the Typography Collection and view the fonts. Cite examples of classic, 20th century and contemporary fonts and which are serif and sans serif.


Visit the Encyclopedia of Typography and Electronic Communication Dictionary of terms .pdf - look up the definition of bitmap, screen, true type and post-script fonts. What are the differences? Why would you choose one over another? Explain.


Hierogylphics were pictographs much like the international symbols. Visit the Hieroglyphics site and discuss how these symbols represented words to the Egyptians.


José Guadalupe Posada was a brilliant Mexican engraver and lithographer. Visit his website and select two images to discuss by Posada. How does he use symbolism in these works? What is he portraying both symbolically and visually in these images?


Norman Rockwell is recognized as one of the best illustrators of 20th century America. His work has appeared in books, magazine covers, calendars, and advertisements. Visit the Rockwell museum site and browse through his illustrations. Describe and discuss his work and use of humor.


Henry Dreyfuss saw the need to communicate through symbols. His symbols we have all come to recognize. Michael Stinson conceived of Symbolman as a story using only international symbols. Visit his site and watch Symbolman and describe what the story is telling us.
