Table of Contents

The Table of Contents allows you to access all chapter-specific sections of the Masterworks presentation as well as the "Master List of all Listening Charts" and Composer Profiles.

Click on an individual chapter title to arrive at that chapter's main page. The Listening Charts for that specific chapter will appear on screen first and you may navigate throughout the chapter by using the navigation bar on the left.

Navigation Bar

Within each chapter is a navigation bar. Click on any of the graphics to view that section.

Clicking on the "Masterworks" logo at the top of the navigation bar will bring you back to the Table of Contents. Clicking on "Last Chapter" will bring you to the previous chapter. Clicking on the "Next Chapter" will bring you to the next chapter.

The items listed in blue (Fundamentals, Timelines, Composer Profiles, Glossary, and Create a Listening Chart) are all global resources. Those will remain the same for each chapter. All other items (listed in black) are chapter specific resources (Quiz, Internet Destinations, Listening Charts).

Fundamentals

The Fundamentals Section is designed as an interactive supplement to illustrate topics in Chapter One of Masterworks, Second Edition. A variety of activities have been developed using Macromedia Shockwave and Beatnik technologies to enhance the learning environment. To access the Fundamentals Section, select any chapter (one through nine).

Then select on the navigation bar to the left. A menu of topics will appear. Choose which topic you would like to explore. Interactive demonstrations will appear automatically when finished loading.

The arrows at the bottom of the page enable you to navigate to the next page. Once you have completed a topic, you will end up at the menu of topics. Each section of Fundamentals has a "quiz". You can take the quiz by clicking on the link on the last page of the section. The menu of topics also has a link to the quiz.

How to use:

Many interactive demonstrations have a small piano keyboard. When clicked on, these keyboard keys will emit the corresponding piano tone.

All of the demonstrations have specific instructions. As an example there are instructions such as, "Click Here" with an arrow showing where to begin. Others require you to click on a specific note on the staff.

If a dialog window pops up with a request to install "beatnik" or "cd pro", do the following:

  1. If you have an active Internet connection, click install. Your computer will install necessary files for the Fundamentals Section to work.
  2. If you are OFFLINE (no Internet connection), click cancel and reinstall with the Masterworks Installer.

If you are an advanced user and you are having trouble with plugins or the installer, you may install the plugins by going to the following Internet sites:
CD Pro (for Listening Charts/Create A Listening Chart) http://www.penworks.com
Beatnik (for Fundamentals Section) http://www.beatnik.com

Listening Charts

Listening Charts are a unique feature of Masterworks where you can actively view commentary about each track of the accompanying audio compact discs.

You may access the Listening Charts through the Table of Contents by clicking on "Listening Charts" on the main Table of Contents page or in each specific chapter by clicking .

The "Master List of all Listening Charts" is a table of all Listening Charts throughout the Masterworks audio compact discs and chapters.

You can also access the chapter specific Listening Charts by navigating to a specific chapter and choosing from the list of Listening Charts presented.

How to use:

Masterworks CD-ROM makes use of the audio compact discs from the Masterworks set. Once (or before) a Listening Chart is loaded, you must insert the specific audio compact disc into your CD-ROM drive. The Listening Chart will check to see if it is the right audio compact disc.

Click "Play" or "00:00" to begin. To skip around to any time, click the time points along the top horizontal rule of the Listening Chart (denoted as 00:00, 0:35, etc., listed in seconds).

You may pause at any time or stop by clicking once on the corresponding buttons. You may notice a one or two second lag in the time that you click a button on the Listening Chart and when the command is actually completed. This lag is normal.

Composer Profiles

Composer Profiles Section has biography information on Master Composers featured in Masterworks.

How to use:

To access the Composer Profiles Section, click from any chapter navigation bar. Some Composer Profiles have links to Listening Charts. These Listening Charts are also available from the Master List of Listening Charts and from the chapter that makes reference to the composer's piece.

Timelines

The Timelines Section illustrates world history at a glance in relation to the origin of Masterworks selected composers and their works.

How to use:

To access the Timelines Section, click from any chapter navigation bar. Choose a specific time period from the menu of choices. A detailed timeline will appear with choices from that era. Click on the text of the timeline to view the selected area of history.

Quiz

The quiz section is a multiple choice quiz specific to the chapter. Take a test by clicking the button for the correct answer. When finished, click, "Check Answers" at the bottom of the page. A Results Reporter will show you your score.

Note: You must use Netscape Navigator version 4.6 or higher for the scoring feature of this presentation to accurately score your test.

Once you've completed the test, you may email your results to a specified address by filling in the "Routing Information" at the bottom of the Results Reporter. Click "Send Results" when finished entering the information.

Internet Destinations

This section illustrates certain Internet links that discuss various points of information relating to the textbook. You must have an active Internet connection in order to view them. If you receive an error that says, "Socket Connection missing" or a dialog box that refuses you access to any one of the Internet Destinations, then your connection is inactive. In order to view the links, you must revive your Internet connection.

Glossary

The Glossary is a global resource that can be accessed from any chapter (except Introduction). Click on the letter at the top of the page to jump to that specific letter of the alphabet. Next to each letter heading is a "Back to Top" link that will bring you back up to the top.

Create a Listening Chart

This is unique feature allows you to create a Listening Chart based on your own audio compact discs. You may access this feature independently of the Masterworks presentation.

Create a Listening Chart is installed with the Masterworks Installation package on this CD-ROM and is launched by opening the application CYOLC.EXE ("CYOLC" for Macintosh users) in your Masterworks Folder (windows users may find this in their "START MENU->Masterworks" menu).

To construct your own Listening Chart, you must employ the use of Microsoft Word (or other Rich Text Format editor, such as Microsoft Works, etc.) to modify a Rich Text Format template that we have provided. Once you've added the appropriate audio cd track and time information, resave the document in the "Masterworks" designated folder and on your hard drive as a text-only file. Insert audio cd and launch the CYOLC.EXE application ("CYOLC" for Macintosh users). Click the "Import" button from within the CYOLC application, choose the template to play, set the cd track number to play, insert the audio cd and press play (or 00:00) to start the Listening Chart.

Here are the following detailed steps to creating your own listening chart:

  1. A folder called, "Masterworks" will be created on your hard drive from the Masterworks installer package. Locate the folder, "Masterworks" and open it (Windows users may look in Start Menu -> Masterworks).
  2. In the CYOLC folder, double click to launch the document, "template.rtf" in Microsoft Word (or another RTF editor).
  3. A table has been created in the template indicating minute/second specific timings and a description box. Fill out the appropriate information for your audio selection by following the provided template. Be sure to erase the sample place holder template information with your new information.
  4. Once complete, save your new Listening Chart in the desktop folder on your hard drive as a text-only file (.txt). You may name the file whatever you wish, as long as it has a ".txt" as its suffix. Example: "rawhide.txt"
  5. Close out of Microsoft Word.
  6. Insert the appropriate audio cd in your computer's cd drive. Make sure that the AUTOPLAY feature does not start the audio CD and there is no other CD Player open. For information on disabling AUTOPLAY see Help.
  7. Launch the CYOLC.EXE ("CYOLC" for Macintosh users) application.
  8. Insert the proper CD Track Number in the "Track" area (small white box) on the left above the "IMPORT" button.
  9. Click the "Import" button on the left side of the Listening Chart area, and select the Listening Chart of your choice from the desktop folder.
  10. Click "Play" at the bottom left of the window or "00:00" to begin the Listening Chart.

Note: Reaction time with this presentation may vary based on the speed of your computer.

You may click "Stop" at any time to stop the Listening Chart, or click on any of the minute/second specific timings to jump to a specific section or description. The Listening Chart may be repeated simply by pressing "Play". To choose a new Listening Chart, click "Import" and choose another .txt file that you have created from the template. To quit the CYOLC application, select "Quit" in the upper right corner.

TO DISABLE AUTOPLAY:
If your audio CD starts playing automatically and is interfering with the use of your Listening Charts, take the following steps to disable CD AUTOPLAY:

  • Macintosh: Select Control Panels->Quicktime Settings from the "FILE" menu. Choose the "AUTOPLAY" menu from the drop-down menu. Turn off the "Enable Audio CD Autoplay" feature by unchecking the check box.
  • Windows: Double click, "My Computer." In "My Computer" window, click "View" then select "Folder Options" at Bottom of drop down menu. Click the "File Types" pane at the top right, then scroll down to "AudioCD" in the file types windows. Double click "AudioCD", then click ONCE on the bold word, "Play" in the "Actions" area. Next, click "Set Default." The word "Play" will no longer be in bold type. Click "close", then "close" again. Autoplay of Audio CD's will no longer occur.
