Chapter 24: The Respiratory System
Net Search

It has been humorously observed that the primary mode of human existence has evolved from "hunting and gathering" to "pointing and clicking." When it comes to finding information on the Internet, the two aren't really so different! With the entire world's information literally at your fingertips, however, searching the Net would be a daunting and incredibly inefficient task without some powerful tools to help you find what you're looking for.

Fortunately, those tools exist in the form of search engines, which are simply programs that do electronically, and on a vastly larger scale, pretty much what indexes, abstracts, and card files have traditionally done: they allow you to locate documents (in this case, Web pages) by subject matter, authorship, or other criteria. Below, we provide you with some key terms relating to the current chapter and links to some excellent search engines, so that you may "point, click, hunt, and gather" anatomical information to your heart's desire.Often, searching for one term will yield a huge number of matching titles; you can combine terms before you start, or just choose one term and then refine your query with additional terms after browsing the preliminary results. And of course, the beauty of "surfing the Web" is that one document almost always links to others, sometimes of more interest than the first.
