Howard Schwartz was born to a Jewish family in St. Louis, Missouri, and educated there at Washington University. As a writer of fiction and poetry, he has been inspired by the Jewish mystical tradition as represented in biblical, Midrashic, and kabbalistic. Other sources of inspiration have been the writing of Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Sufi and, Zen parables. His fictional works include Adam’s Soul: The Collected Tales of Howard Schwarz (1992) and The Four Who Entered Paradise: A Novella (1995). He is also the editor of numerous anthologies, including Miriam’s Tambourine: Jewish Tales from Around the World (1988), Lilith’s Cave: Jewish Tales of the Supernatural, Imperial Messages: One Hundred Modern Parables (1975), Gabriel’s Palace: Jewish Mystical Tales (1993), and Elijah’s Violin & Other Jewish Fairy Tales (1994).
