Adrienne Rich
(1929-)

Adrienne Rich was born in Baltimore, Maryland and educated at Radcliffe College. She was selected as a Yale Younger Poet, which led to the publication of her first volume of poetry, A Change of World (1951). She is know for her important contributions to feminist theory and lesbian rights. Winner of many awards and honors, in 1992 Rich received the Academy of American Poets’ fellowship for "distinguished poetic achievement."

Rich’s volumes of poetry include Poems (1952); The Diamond Cutter and Other Poems (1955); Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law: Poems 1954-1962 (1963); Necessities of Life (1966); Selected Poems (1967); Leaflets: Poems 1965-1968 (1969); The Will to Change: Poems 1968-1970 (1971); Diving into the Wreck: Poems 1971-1972 (1973), which won the National Book Award; Poems Selected and New 1950-1974 (1974); The Dream of a Common Language: Poems 1974-1977 (1978); A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far: Poems 1978-1981 (1981); The Fact of a Doorframe (1984); Your Native Land, Your Life (1986); Time’s Power (1989); An Atlas of the Difficult World: Poems 1988-1991 (1991), which won the Poets’ Prize; Collected Early Poems, 1950-1970 (1993); Dark Fields of the Republic: Poems 1991-1995; and Midnight Salvage: Poems 1995-1998 (1999).
