Antoine de Saint-Exupery was born in Lyon , France , into a family of the landed aristocracy. Throughout his life, Saint-Exupery was irrepressible, discontent, and adventurous. These qualities were combined in his love of literature and aviation. From the late 1920s he worked in aviation, as an airmail pilot in North Africa, a director of the Argentine airmail service, an advertising director for Air France , and finally an officer in the French air force. After the fall of France in 1940, Saint-Exupery visited the United States, where he wrote The Little Prince. But in 1943 he rejoined his old squadron and was killed in a reconnaissance mission off the coast of Corsica in 1944. His novels include Southern Mail (1928), Night Flight (1931), Wind, Sand, and Stars (1939), and Flight to Arras. He is best remembered for his modern folktale, The Little Prince (1943). Author Links
