Margaret Eleanor Atwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and was educated at the University of Toronto and Radcliffe College. One of Canada's major authors, Atwood is known for her political engagement and her biting wit. Her volumes of poetry include The Circle Game (1964); Speeches for Doctor Frankenstein (1966); The Animals in the Country (1968); The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970); Procedures for Underground (1970); Power Politics (1971); You Are Happy (1974), in which "Siren Song" appears; Selected Poems 1965-1975 (1976); Marsh Hawk (1977); Two-Headed Poems (1978); Notes Toward a Poem That Can Never Be Written (1981); True Stories (1981); Snake Poems (1983); Interlunar (1984); Selected Poems II: 1976-1986 (1987); and Morning in the Burned House: New Poems (1996).

Atwood has written eleven novels and three collections of short stories, notably Surfacing (1972); Lady Oracle (1976); Life Before Man (1980); The Handmaid's Tale (1986), which won the Canadian Governor General's Award; Cat's Eye (1989); Wilderness Tips (1991); The Robber Bride (1993); and Alias Grace (1997). The Handmaid's Tale was adapted for a movie by the same name in 1989. Atwood is known for her use of irony, her ability to portray the difficulties of male and female relationships, and her transformation of myth and folktale to reveal modern truths.
