Lucius Apuleius
(fl. A.D. 125)

Lucius Apuleius was born in Numidia, North Africa. He was trained as a lawyer, worked in Rome, but spent most of his time in Carthage. His literary works include De Daemone Socratis [On the God of Socrates] (n.d.), on the subject of invisible spirits, and Metamorphosis, or The Golden Ass, which is a narrative concerning the adventures of a young man in the form of a golden ass.

"The Myth of Cupid and Psyche" is a narrative in The Golden Ass, which has been retold many times: by John Milton in Comus (1634), John Keats in his "Ode to Psyche," (1819), Walter Pater's Marius the Epicurean (1885), and William Morris's Earthly Paradise (1868-1870). This version of the story taken from Latin is by Thomas Bulfinch and appears in his Mythology.
