Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar are the authors of Shakespeare’s Sisters: Feminist Essays on Women Poets (1979); The Madwoman in the Attic (1980), which focuses on nineteenth-century woman writers; and No Man’s Land: The Place of the Woman Writer in the Twentieth Century, a three-volume study including The War of the Words (Vol. 1, 1990), Sexchanges (Vol. 2, 1991), and Letters from the Front (Vol. 3, 1996). They are also the editors of The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women: The Tradition in English (2nd ed., 1996) and Mothersongs: Poems for, by, and About Mothers(1995).

Sandra Gilbert remains an active scholar and teacher. In 1996 she served as president of the Modern Language Association. She is currently a Professor of English at the University of California at Davis. Susan Gubar is a Distinguished Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Indiana University. She is currently working on a collection of essays to be published by Columbia University Press.
