Short story writer and novelist Sandra Cisneros, a Mexican-American, was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1954. She has worked as a teacher of high school dropouts, a college recruiter, and an arts administrator. She has held two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Currently she serves a number of colleges as a visiting writer. The House on Mango Street (1983), which includes the story by the same name, was Cisneros' first book. Her second book of stories, Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories, was published in 1991. A volume of poems, Loose Woman: Poems, appeared in 1995. Cisneros' works helped bring the Mexican-American woman (chicana) perspective into the feminist literary mainstream and she is one of few chicana writers to achieve commercial success. Her works are firmly established on many high school and university reading lists. She lives in San Antonio, Texas. Author Links
