Julia Alvarez
(1959- )

Julia Alvarez was born in New York City but grew up in the Dominican Republic, returning to live in the United States when she was ten. She is known for both her poetry and prose, especially her novel, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (1991). She won the American Poetry Prize in 1974.

A volume of poetry, Homecoming, was published in 1984, and her novel, In the Time of Butterflies, appeared in 1994. In 1995 a second book of poetry, The Other Side: El Otro Lado, was published. She has taught creative writing and literature at different colleges and universities, most recently at Middlebury College in Vermont.
