Supreme Court Hears Hawaiian Voting Case:
Click on the link above to read about the case of Rice v. Cayetano, and then write an essay in which you describe the history and details of the case. If the court rules that racial discrimination has occurred, how might that affect voting rights and affirmative action issues in the U.S.? Do you think that the case involves racial discrimination? Can such justification ever be justified? Be sure to explain your answer.

Affirmative Action Battle Set in Florida
At the site shown here, you can read about a referendum initiative aimed at amending Florida’s constitution so that it bans racial or gender preferences throughout the state in public employment, education and contracting. The ballot initiative is patterned after similar measures that passed in California and Washington State. Write an essay in which you examine the issues related to the rethinking of affirmative action. Do you think that Americans are "ready to try functioning as a colorblind society"? Be sure to explain your answer.
