Chapter 2: Genetic Manipulation and Cloning: Experimental Accounts
Destinations

Link up to the following websites to find more resources on cloning and other reproductive technologies.

Ethics Updates
Lawrence Hinman's site on reproductive technologies contains links to many other useful sites, including ethics centers, professional ethics organizations and ethics reports from the National Bioethics Advisory Committee. Also available here are links to on-line religious documents and newsletters on reproductive technology. The site is rich with bibliographical information on cloning, surrogacy, genetic screening and engineering and contains a large set of links to articles on cloning.

Roslin Institute Online: Information on Cloning and Nuclear Transfer
Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Scotland is now famous for heading up the first research team to successfully clone an adult mammal (a sheep nicknamed "Dolly"). This site will give you access to the Institute's press releases, provide you with background information on cloning and nuclear transfer and present abstracts of key papers regarding Wilmut's work.

National Bioethics Advisory Commission
This is the official site of the NBAC, a commission created by President Clinton in 1995 to study ethical issues arising from research on human biology. You will find here the commission's Executive Summaries on human stem cell research, human cloning, animal cloning and much more. Included are links to online articles that explain the science of cloning and examine the religious, ethical, social and political considerations associated with it.

Human Genome Project Information
Sponsored by the Human Genome Program at the U.S. Department of Energy, this site explains the goals and priorities of the Human Genome Project and describes the progress, timelines and costs of the projects. Included here is a link to information about ELSI (a commission established in 1990 to study the ethical, legal and social issues associated with human genetic research.) The array of ethical questions posed there is quite thorough. The site contains many helpful links to other sites on genetic research and related ethical issues.

The National Human Genome Research Institute
This site, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is much like the site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, although perhaps a bit more technical. Two of the most helpful features of the site are an audio glossary that explains some of the terminology related to genetic research and an up-to-date news section that tracks the progress, etc. of the project.

In Vitro Fertilization
Provided here is a concise, accessible explanation of the process of in vitro fertilization and the opportunity to link to other sites on this and other assisted reproductive technologies.
