Chapter 10: Living Together with Animals
Contemporary Applications

End to Most P&G Animal Tests
Click on this link to read an article about an American company that has long been the target of animal rights activists and has now decided to halt the use of animal tests for most of its products. Write an essay in which you both describe and evaluate the kinds of activities animal advocates used in their attempt to stop animal testing at P&G. Do you believe the pressure was justified? Do you believe it was effective? If testing hadn't stopped, would further kinds of action be warranted by animal rights activists? Explain.

PETA Grills McDonald's
Click on this link to read an article about PETA's recent attempts to get McDonald's to take steps to reduce animal cruelty. Think back to both Steinbock's and Varner's essays in this chapter, and then write an essay in which you decide whether McDonald's could possibly make substantive changes in the level of animal cruelty without adopting a completely vegetarian menu. What does "cruelty" encompass? Be sure to include Steinbock's definition of "cruelty" and both Peter Singer's and Tom Regan's definitions of "harm" in your essay.
