Chapter 4: Motion and Force: Dynamics
Warm-Ups

1.

The word push is a reasonably good synonym for the word force. Is hold a synonym for force? How about support?

How many others can you think of?

2.

The engine on a fighter airplane can exert a force of 105,840 N (24,000 pounds). The take-off mass of the fighter plane is 16,875 kg. (An F-16 weighs 37,500 pounds.) If you mounted the airplane engine on your car, what acceleration would you get? (Use a reasonable estimate for the mass of your car.)

3.

A 72 kg skydiver is descending on a parachute. His speed is still increasing at 1.2 m/s2. What is the magnitude and direction of the force of the parachute harness on the diver? What is the magnitude and direction of the net force on the diver?

4.

A 1200 kg car traveling at 13 m/s is able to skid to a stop over a distance of 30 meters. What must be the coefficient of friction between the road and the tires for this to be possible?
