"Radiation Penetration"

Consider two common types of radiation: gamma rays and alpha particles. Gamma rays will penetrate much thicker shielding than alphas, but when considering the harm that they do, a dose of alpha particles is considered more harmful than the same dose of gammas (higher quality factor). Explain why this is so.
