Chapter 14: Heat
Puzzles

1.

"Bar Heating"

Twelve identical aluminum bars are welded together in the form of a cube. The bars have length 50 cm and radius 1 cm. The thermal conductivity of aluminum is 200 J/m-s-°C. If one corner (labeled A) is held at 100°C, and the opposite corner (labeled B) is held at 0°C, what will be the total heat flow from corner A to corner B?

Hint: Take advantage of symmetry: If the total heat flow is HT, what will be the heat flow in each leg?
