Chapter 12: Sound
Warm-Ups

1.

Estimate the power in joules/sec contained in a loud yell.

2.

What is the dynamic range, in decibels, of a healthy human voice?

3.

Explain in words why only the odd harmonics will be present in sound emitted from a pipe that is open at one end and closed at the other.

4.

Filling an auditorium with warm human bodies will raise the temperature from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius. Estimate the percentage change of the speed of sound in the auditorium. Will that affect the pitch of the piano? The trumpet?
