Sampling and Reconstruction with Sound Output

This applet shows the waveform of a continuous signal, its sampled version, and a reconstruction of the original signal from the sampled signal. There are four different signals from which to choose. The user can also select the sampling rate.

The pull-down menu at the top of the applet contains four signals: two cosine waves of different frequencies, a short section of an audio signal, and a 0 to 2kHz "chirp" signal.

Under the graph of the original signal, there is a scroll bar to increase or decrease the sampling rate. The default value at start-up is 500 Hz, and the rate can be varied in a range from 62.5 Hz to16 kHz.

The reconstructed signal may be played through the computer's sound system by clicking on the bottom button. Note that very low-frequencyand very high-frequency signals will not be audible, and that short sections of voice or music will not be intelligible when played repetitively.
