Let's take a closer look at olestra. While most artificial sweeteners, food colors, and fat replacers can be used for any food product, olestra is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in "savory snacks" (e.g., potato chips) only. Some experts say that it is safe. Others think the side effects outweigh the benefits. In this exercise we will examine the pros and cons of the issue. Visit the sites below and answer the questions.

1.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) opposes the use of olestra. Their reasons are listed on The Problems with Olestra site. What are they?

2.

Check out the manufacturer's site for a more positive spin. What are The Olean (commercial name for olestra) Benefits? Also check out the Digestive Effects and the page on vitamin absorption questions. Make a comparison chart listing the positive and negative "facts" you have collected.

3.

Take a final look at your olestra chart. Will you be eating olestra from now on? Would you recommend it to a friend? Optional: For more information on the complicated FDA approval process, look at government publication Olestra and Other Fat Substitutes.
